Project overview
Hydronic heating pipework was installed within the structural concrete slab across selected residential zones. The circuits were coordinated around walls, services and structural elements to provide even radiant heating through the finished floor. For this new-build home in Gladesville, SmartHeat installed hydronic in-slab heating across the ground floor, divided into two zones. A 9kW R290 inverter heat pump connected to a 100L buffer tank supplies the hydronic heating system.
Ground-floor hydronic heating zones
- Zone 1: kitchen, living room, dining room and laundry.
- Zone 2: media room and study.
Electric underfloor heating was also installed in three bathrooms: the ground-floor ensuite, first-floor master ensuite and first-floor bathroom.
The challenge
The architect contacted SmartHeat to request in-slab underfloor heating with a heat pump, with energy efficiency in mind. The heating installation needed to be coordinated with a concrete slab constructed in two pours.
The two-stage slab installation required pipework connections to be left ready for the next visit. The bathroom heating work also needed to follow completion of waterproofing and electrical conduits.
The solution
On the first visit, the team installed the Zone 1 pipework on top of the steel mesh and left pipe tails for the later connection. On the second visit, the team connected to those tails and installed the Zone 2 pipework.
Electric heating mats were installed after waterproofing and conduits had been completed in the three bathrooms.
The team then installed the 9kW R290 inverter heat pump and connected it to the 100L buffer tank. The equipment was selected to suit the hydronic system and the architect's brief.
The system was tested, commissioned and successfully handed over to the client in May 2026.
