Project overview

Designer hydronic radiators were installed across selected rooms and connected to the central water-based heating system. The radiators combine responsive room heating with a distinctive finish suited to the residence’s interior design.

This renovation of an existing Darling Point home included 10 custom-designed hydronic radiators across three floors, supplied by a 22kW R290 inverter heat pump.

Radiator locations

  • Ground floor — 5 radiators: sitting room, dining room, foyer, kitchen and bedroom 4.
  • First floor — 4 radiators: Sitting 2, master bedroom, foyer and bedroom 2.
  • Second floor — 1 radiator: study.

SmartHeat also installed in-slab heating in the outdoor seating area, arranged to operate when the main radiator heating system is active.

Electric underfloor heating was installed in the ground-floor gym ensuite and laundry, and in the first-floor master ensuite and bathroom.

The challenge

The builder contacted SmartHeat to retrofit the home with designer radiators during the renovation. The client wanted hydronic heating in selected rooms and radiators that complemented the interior decor.

The different radiator designs required accurate measurements of their pipe connection centres so that the pipework and rough-ins would align with each unit.

Access within the existing building was limited. In some sections, pipework had to be routed through chases in the ceiling because there was no access from below.

The solution

Site manager Bevin made regular site visits to check measurements and coordinate the installation team. This helped the team position the radiator pipework and rough-ins to suit the selected designs.

The team installed the 10 radiators and integrated the 22kW R290 inverter heat pump as the hydronic heat source. Energy efficiency and the radiator system's operating temperature requirements informed the heat-source selection.

Pipework was also laid beneath the ground floor towards the gym as a future provision, allowing for a radiator to be added there if the client chooses.

The outdoor seating-area in-slab heating was connected to operate with the main radiator system, alongside the separate electric underfloor heating in the specified ensuite, bathroom and laundry areas.

The project was completed, tested and successfully handed over to the client in December 2024.
